How many panels will i need?
This will depend on the type of technology you choose but typically just two solar panels are required to heat water and around 10- 15 solar PV panels is sufficient to supply the solar energy needs of an average household. If you have a larger project in mind, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Do we have enough sun in the UK?
Absolutely yes. It is important to distinguish between solar radiation levels and air temperature. Even if you cannot see the sun, if there is daylight there will be diffuse solar radiation. Solar radiation is what provides the energy for the panels and solar radiation levels in this country are as high as parts of Germany (the largest solar market in the world) and 60% of the levels at the equator.
Will solar panels work in the cold?
Yes. Solar heating and PV panels are temperature independent working on solar radiation. They will work on cold, clear winter days providing you with a surprising amount of energy. One of our clients has reported temperatures of 50 centigrade in his hot water cylinder in February with his boiler switched off; all of the heat provided by solar energy! It is a similar story for solar PV.
Which way should the panels face?
It should face roughly south, but anything between southeast and southwest is fine, often panels facing east or west can be efficient enough to be cost effective. Solar panels can be installed on any roof angle from horizontal to vertical allowing the panels to be positioned on a pitched roof, flat roof or even on a wall.
What about shade?
Shade from buildings or trees will reduce the amount of solar energy that falls on the solar panel, so the less shade, the better. Solar PV panels in particular are susceptible to shading which can reduce their effectiveness significantly. There is technology available to minimise the impact of shading, such as smart inverters which split the solar PV array into several parts, it is best to avoid shading where possible. Eco2Solar can advise you of this as part of the survey process.
Can i convert my existing hot water system?
Yes. A solar heating system can be fitted to existing water heating systems (including combi-boilers) whether powered by gas, oil, solid fuel or electricity.
Do i need planning permission?
No. Unless your house is a listed building or is under construction, in which case you will be putting plans in anyway.
